Pensacola Hurricane Sally Repairs

The Jenkins Group designed the Hurricane Sally storm-damage repairs to ten buildings at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Florida, for Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southeast. The repairs are design-build task orders, with the firm as architect on the design-build team. Package 7A covers a training building built in 1941 and an aircraft maintenance hangar. Package 4 covers Gunn Hall at Corry Station, an instructional building originally built as a hangar; the NETC administration building; a training facility at Corry Station; the air operations building; the aviation maintenance school; a steel warehouse; a relief supply storage building; and a small boiler building. They range from about 600 to 774,000 square feet and date from the early 1930s to the early 2000s.

The repair scope follows the damage. At the NETC administration building, which the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) considers an eligible structure, the design replaces all windows with impact-rated aluminum units meant to replicate the originals, and adds lintel and masonry repair and stormwater drainage improvements. At the 1941 training building, windows, doors and rusted lintels are replaced to meet SHPO requirements alongside a new roof. The hangar receives a new roof, and the boiler building new parapet caps, roof terminations and doors. The aviation maintenance school and the Corry Station training facility receive roof, canopy, sealant, door and interior ceiling repairs. Gunn Hall gets new fascia at its corner towers, the air operations building new north-side windows, repainting and a replacement air handler, the warehouse new lower wall panels and sealants, and the supply storage building wall panel repairs, new doors and removal of an interior mezzanine. Hazardous material surveys shaped the abatement notes. The Navy reviews each design in stages, and the firm reviews submittals and visits the site during construction.
